Workforce Development Related to the Marcellus Shale and Environmental Careers in Northeastern PA

The development of the Marcellus Shale in Northeastern Pennsylvania has resulted in the need for additional and continued training on a number of environmental issues and health and safety practices. To meet this demand, B.F. Environmental Consultants has developed the Online University to help provide affordable education, certification programs, and continuing education courses on subjects ranging from bloodborne pathogens, alternative energy, workforce development, petrochemical, geotechnical, OSHA, HAZWOPER Training, environmental monitoring, and more.

The program and outreach provides education and information to the community, workforce, and industry. The Safety engineering courses encompass a wide variety of online classes designed to help those in the health and safety professions increase their knowledge with such diverse areas as: Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout),
Fire Protection and Prevention, Legionnaires’ Disease, Permit-Required-Confined Spaces, Small Business Safety and Health Management, OSHA, HAZOPER, and much more.

The Petrochemical Oil and Gas courses are self-paced and open enrollment, and many offer mandatory continuing education credits. A wide variety of topics are covered in this category including the transportation of liquids in pipelines, technologies for oil and gas exploration, and types of corrosion and control techniques. In the Gas Pipeline Hydraulics course, students will learn how to calculate the properties of a natural gas mixture.

The comprehensive geotechnical engineering training courses include training in the Design and Construction of Earth Dams, lateral earth pressure, retaining walls, bearing capacity of shallow footings and soil properties.

Wind Energy Apprentice Program Announced

Wind energy companies are growing exponentially to meet America's demand for clean, renewable, and domestic energy. This entry level Wind Energy Apprentice online training course prepares you for a career in the wind energy industry. The apprentice program provides over 240 hours hours of training on energy and the wind energy field.

Wind energy companies are growing exponentially to meet America's demand for clean, renewable, and domestic energy. This entry level Wind Energy Apprentice course prepares you for a career in the wind energy industry. Students will learn the basics of wind energy principles including wind technology, wind energy anatomy, wind farm design, wind business, and characteristics of energy sources. This course covers the fundamentals of hydraulics and basic theory and practice of electrical circuits, including calculations as applied to alternating and direct currents.

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

• Describe the evolution of wind turbine technology.
• Identify and describe wind farm anatomy of general wind terminology, parts of the turbine, plant, and components of the team.
• Discuss air flow characteristics and blade efficiencies.
• Implement customer relationship and management (CRM) strategies
• Discuss business planning process using various tools (six-sigma, root-cause analysis, and/or strengths- weaknesses - opportunities - threats (SWOT) methodology.
• Explain inventory control, materials, and supply chain management.
• Assess Human Resource policies, procedures, and documentation.
• Explain contract management, fulfillment, and liability to landowner and manufacturer.
• Discuss wind business policies and procedures.
• Explain atomic structure and basic values such as voltage, current, resistance and power.
• Determine electrical values for combination circuits in direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) containing resistance, inductance, and capacitance.
• Summarize the principles of magnetism.
• Calculate voltage drop based on conductor length, type of material and size.
• Utilize electrical measuring instruments.
• Display competence in principles and operation of basic hydraulic systems.
• Use flow meters and pressure gauges to measure valves and make adjustments.
• Interpret schematics and troubleshoot both open and closed center hydraulic systems.
• Display a systematic approach to troubleshooting.
• Design a schematic drawing of a working hydraulic system with components, valves and sizes included.
